It is estimated the Purple Gang was responsible for 500 unsolved murders in the span of just five incredibly violent years, topping even Al Capone's body count.
After talking with people at lunch counters, barber shops, and bars, it seems that everyone in Detroit had a great uncle, cousin or friend of the family in the gang.
In truth, the Purple Gang consisted of a small number (less than 50) of Jewish men that grew up within a block or two of Hastings Street on Detroit's near east side.
